Integrative Medicine May Be Pivotal In Resolving HealthCare Crisis

Dr. Andrew Weil is actively and passionately involved in integrative medicine. He is the Director of the Center for Integrative Medicine of the College of Medicine at the University of Arizona.

Dr. Weil sees integrative medicine as being key to the resolution of the healthcare crisis in the U.S. Integrative medicine can lower costs, and focuses on lifestyle medicine. He envisions integrative medicine taking its place in the medical mainstream in the U.S.

Dr. Weil:
I feel very strongly that integrative medicine is a big part of the solution to America’s healthcare crisis. The root problem we have is uncontrollably rising costs. Integrative medicine can lower healthcare costs in two ways.

First, by truly focusing on prevention and health promotion through lifestyle medicine. And secondly by identifying and bringing into the medical mainstream lower cost treatments that aren’t dependent on expensive technology.

So I think that it’s really economic necessity that’s now going to propel integrative medicine into the mainstream of American medicine.

About Dr. Weil, M.D.:
Dr. Andrew Weil, M.D., was born in Philadelphia in 1942, received an A.B. degree in biology (botany) from Harvard in 1964 and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1968. After completing a medical internship at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco, he worked a year with the National Institute of Mental Health before writing his first book, The Natural Mind. From 1971-75, as a Fellow of the Institute of Current World Affairs, Dr. Weil traveled widely in North and South America and Africa collecting information on drug use in other cultures, medicinal plants, and alternative methods of treating disease. From 1971-84 he was on the research staff of the Harvard Botanical Museum and conducted investigations of medicinal and psychoactive plants.
