Joanna recalls the thyroid test she had to learn more about her developing condition.
Joanna:
In terms of the test you know, what I said to my acupuncturist is, “How do I know for sure how bad it is? Do I need to be on supplements? What else do I need to do? I feel like there’s another part of the puzzle that I don’t know about what’s really going on with my thyroid. I know I have a thyroid issue. I am starting to get treatment but how bad is it and do I need to do anything else?”
And so what he suggested is that I get some baseline blood work done and he sent me some links for the basic workup of the task. I had a really hard time finding a doctor that would do all the tasks. I basically resigned myself to getting, there was like five tests that I needed to get done. I could only find, my OB/GYN would only do three out of the five, basically because he couldn’t, he didn’t know how to read the other ones so he has just been honest with me about that.
So I got TSH, the T3 and the T4 test blood work done and then I found out that he gave me the report that they came back all within range and fine. I went back to my acupuncturist and I said, I emailed him, I said, “Now what do I do? They came back fine”, and he said, “Take your basal body temperature.” So, he sent me instructions to take my basal body temperature. I have to take that at certain time of the month for five days, every morning within the first five minutes of when you wake up.
And from that I learned that I was below range, every single day. I didn’t even hit the lowest part of the range. Normal range is 97.8 to 98.2. I think the closest I got was a 97.18. So some days I was like in the 97s, some days I was in the 96s during that five-day period.
