Pulmonary Fibrosis: What Factors Led To Your Diagnosis?

Nancy discusses possible causes of her pulmonary fibrosis.

Nancy:
I did smoke, and as a child of the 60s I did smoke pot once in a while, too. I also was a hair dresser for 15 years back in the 70s where heavy hairspray was the norm.

So, 8 to 10 hours a day my lungs were being filled with a cement-type product. That, I’m sure, had something to do with it.

They don’t know what the reason is. They don’t, I’m stuttering now. They don’t know what causes pulmonary fibrosis. Apparently there’s a lot of things internally and environmentally.

The first thing they asked me was if I’d ever worked around asbestos. No. But I feel that hairspray was worse. But you just have to take good care of yourself.

I didn’t early on. I quit smoking 13 years ago. And I really thought I had beat it.
