Ellen recommends advice to women starting chemotherapy for ovarian cancer.
Ellen:
Surround yourself with friends, surround yourself with people like you, talk to people, ask the oncologist or the oncology nurse for someone’s name that you can talk to because everything that’s in your head isn’t necessarily what goes on. I had, if you will, a mentor who called me before I started chemotherapy, someone around my same age, and talking to her just eased my mind so much.
There’s been so much change in chemotherapy, I think the first place because we’re going to be really sick and that’s not the case. They do everything they can to keep you from getting nauseas or from rejecting the chemo. So it’s really not as bad as you think. I think you have to ask the questions that you need, you have to find people who have been there, who have gone through it and face it head on. It’s not nearly as bad as we create in our minds.
