Acupuncture May Help Lift Depression During Pregnancy

It is not uncommon for some women to struggle with depression while they are pregnant. It's estimated that 10 - 15 percent of women deal with this during pregnancy. In the past, it would have been necessary for them to just tough it out or turn to their doctors to get prescriptions for antidepressants. But many women and their doctors would rather steer clear of the use of antidepressants, especially during pregnancy.

A study on the efficacy of acupuncture suggested that acupuncture can help reduce depression for some pregnant women.

"Acupuncture treatments were provided in a blinded fashion. At baseline, a senior acupuncturist (non-blinded) designed a set of treatments that was individually tailored for each patient. A treating acupuncturist (blinded) needled the points that were prescribed by the senior acupuncturist. Each SPEC and NSPEC treatment consisted of the same number of acupuncture points distributed across the same general areas of the body."
