NEW YORK (Reuters) - Britney Spears' 17-year-old sister Jamie Lynn, star of Nickelodeon's popular TV show "Zoey 101," has given birth to a baby girl, People magazine reported on Thursday.
Jamie Lynn Spears gave birth to Maddie Briann on Thursday morning at a hospital in Mississippi, the magazine said.
Jamie Lynn Spears's hometown of Kentwood, La., was buzzing with the news she gave birth, with friends and relatives expressing surprise, relief and confidence the 17-year-old will be a good mother.
"She's awfully young to be a momma," says distant cousin Margie Busby. "But that's what they make [grandmothers] for. They have to help. That's the way it is with our circle of friends."
Nickelodeon issued a statement about the birth on Thursday, saying, "We wish her and her family well." Nickelodeon spokeswoman Marianne Romano said that filming of the fourth and final season of "Zoey 101" was completed last summer before Spears became pregnant.
The father is Casey Aldridge, a 19-year-old pipe layer from Liberty, Miss. The couple are not married but announced an engagement several months ago, and they live together near Liberty. Her family owns a home across the state line in Kentwood, La.
