Susan explains how advocating for her rheumatoid arthritis helped her condition.

Susan:
I was seeing a doctor who was an HMO generalist that happened to be a rheumatologist and he was more focused on general medication. So, he kept me going with an older generation of medicine that helped, but it didn’t really help as much as some of the newer medications could have.

Actually, when my insurance program changed, I decided to do a little research and find somebody who is totally focused on rheumatology and I happened to find an excellent doctor in The City who advised me. He took me through all the different medications that were out there, what the pros and the cons of them were, for example, am I comfortable giving myself a shot, would I want to come into the doctor’s office on a regular basis. A lot of those answers for me, personally, was no, and we ended up finding a drug that, within 30 days, really reduced my symptoms drastically.
