Women's health advocate Jane Fonda describes the realization she has come to about adolescent pregnancy.
Jane Fonda:
In the 13 years that I have been focusing on this problem, my big epiphany was realizing that hope is the best contraceptive. A child who doesn’t see a future for themselves has no motivation to avoid risky behavior.
Middle-class kids, they know that they can be somebody and having a child, out of wedlock in particular, but when you’re too young, can compromise the future that they see beckoning and so, one of the main things that we do, the work that we do in Georgia is above the waist because we think that what motivates children to engage in risky behavior is more about what’s going on between their ears than between their legs. So we try to give them hope.
