Skin can become discolored and plagued with scarring as the years go by, but there are ways to bring back a healthy, even complexion.

The color of your skin is caused by the type and amount of melanin in your skin. Melanin is a substance that also protects skin from sun damage.

When skin becomes over-exposed to the sun, it may begin to appear patchy where there is a change in the amount of melanin. Such vulnerability to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can then result in uneven skin tone or brown spots, also known as sunspots.

Skin tone can also become discolored and uneven due to changes in hormone levels during times like pregnancy and menopause, as well as from scarring caused by acne.

There are several ways women can try to correct the tone of their skin and prevent further discoloration. Here are some tips to test out for a more even complexion:

1. Drink More Water.

Is there anything that drinking more water can’t fix? Water helps keep skin healthy and nourished from the inside out. When you drink water frequently, your skin will stay hydrated and moisturized, keeping it free of dry, old skin. Try decreasing the amount of soda and other sugary drinks you consume, and replace them with water.

2. Use an Exfoliator.

Creating a simple DIY exfoliator with sugar can help make your skin look and feel brand new. Gently exfoliating your skin will help scrub away old and dead skin, and leave your complexion looking more even and healthy. Creating a sugar scrub exfoliator can be as simple as mixing ½ cup of sugar with ½ a cup of olive oil or coconut oil, then scrubbing a small amount on your skin and rinsing it off. If you prefer to purchase an exfoliator, there are several different options available in stores based off your personal skin type.

3. Try Bio-Oil®.

Bio-Oil® is a dermatologist recommended skincare oil that can help reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone while also minimizing markings of new or old scars. This fast absorbing, non-greasy oil will leave your skin hydrated and evenly toned.

Bio-Oil® has been clinically proven to improve the appearance of uneven skin tone. Its ingredients include Vitamin A and calendula oil, which have cell regenerative effects to create skin renewal.

Bio-Oil® can be used daily for hydration, and is considered the United States’ original tissue oil, a category of product that helps heal skin with therapeutic and healthy ingredients.

To use Bio-Oil® for uneven skin, apply to your affected areas twice daily, for 3 months minimum. Bio-Oil® does not work like a sunscreen, so it’s important to still apply sunscreen once the product has fully absorbed.

4. Apply sunscreen regularly.

Using sunscreen throughout the year is critical for healthy skin. Prevent your skin’s complexion from becoming discolored and dry by using SPF when spending time outdoors. Applying a sunscreen with at least SPF 15 every day will help keep skin healthy and evenly toned.

Over-exposure to UV rays is one of the main causes of uneven skin tone, so it’s important to apply sunscreen with a strong SPF – even in the winter months.

5. Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet.

Eating junk foods causes your skin to become oily, which may trigger acne and other skin impurities. Eating foods rich in antioxidants, like blueberries, kale, sweet potatoes and spinach, can help protect your skin from cellular damage and promote a more even complexion.

6. Try a face peel.

A face peel is a mask that is applied to the face and removes dead skin cells when it is peeled off. These types of facemasks are efficient at removing dead skin so new layers can grow instead, which can help improve the look of one’s overall skin tone. However, face peels can vary in cost and there may be risk factors for some, so it is important to talk to your dermatologist before getting one.

7. Moisturize more frequently.

Finding the perfect moisturizer is key to healthy and glowing skin. Creams and lotions may work well for some, but Bio-Oil® is another option you may want to try. Bio-Oil® contains no water while creams and lotions often contain up to 75 percent water.

Bio-Oil® consists of vitamins and natural plant extracts within an oil base. When applied to the skin, the oil absorbs beyond the surface of the skin deep into the dermis, promoting a more even skin tone.

Using Bio-Oil® instead of a traditional lotion as your primary moisturizer may help improve the appearance of skin tone, while also keeping skin hydrated.

8. Don’t pick at your skin.

When you pick at pimples and blemishes, it can create scars on your skin. Plus, when you have acne and don’t apply sunscreen regularly, it can cause breakouts to darken even more and leave brown spots behind. When acne is bothering you, try to refrain from touching it to avoid a more uneven skin tone.

It’s important to remember that we all have different skin types, so our skin make react differently to various treatments. See what works best for you to achieve your healthiest skin.
