Dr. Alinsod explains if women experience more incontinence problems if they have had a hysterectomy.

Dr. Alinsod:
Some recent data shows that people with hysterectomies indeed have more incontinence problems. I think it could be related, I am not sure, but it could be related that when you take out the uterus some doctors don’t suspend the top of the uterus so that it doesn’t fall out, and so there is a little bit of prolapse of the top of the uterus and a little bit of less support for the urethra.

You need support for the urethra so that it acts, this support acts like a backboard so that when you cough and sneeze the urethra gets compressed, but there seems to be perhaps less of that when you do a hysterectomy.

There’s another theory also; with a hysterectomy you may damage some nerves that control the muscles in the pelvis. I don’t know exactly why it happens, but it’s been seen in some studies that a hysterectomy may result in some stress incontinence in the future.
