A company called Candy Dynamics is recalling all flavors of their chew bar, Toxic Waste® brand Nuclear Sludge®, after testing revealed the presence of lead in the product.

The testing of lot number 8288A cherry-flavored chew bar contained elevated levels of lead (0.24 parts per million) that could cause health problems and is particularly dangerous for babies, children and pregnant women.

For safety reasons, all lot numbers and all flavors have been withdrawn as a precaution.

The products are identified as: Toxic Waste® Nuclear Sludge® Cherry Chew Bar (UPC 0 89894 81430 6), Toxic Waste® Nuclear Sludge® Sour Apple Chew Bar (UPC 0 10684 81410 7), and Toxic Waste® Nuclear Sludge® Blue Raspberry Chew Bar (UPC 0 89894 81420 7).

All of the products were distributed throughout the U.S. in retail stores and through mail order. The product is imported from Pakistan.

The cherry flavor has been permanently discontinued. The company had previously withdrawn two other flavors of the chew bar.

Exposure to lead usually has no noticeable side-effects, so many people don’t know if they have been exposed to lead. However, long-term exposure to low levels of lead can lead to many health problems, including lower IQ scores and behavioral problems. Children who ingest a large amount of lead risk their lives and can develop brain damage, severe stomachaches, anemia and muscle weakness.

Adults who are exposed to lead can suffer from infertility, nerve disorders, muscle and joint pain, and behavioral changes including loss of concentration and irritability. Lead can also cause high blood pressure which in turn increases the risk of heart attacks and stroke and is particularly dangerous for pregnant women, who may develop complications as a result of high blood pressure.

No consumers of the chew bars have reported any illnesses resulting from them, but anyone who has bought the affected product, should telephone the company for advice on its destruction. Please call Eileen O’Neal at 317-228-5012 (Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm EST) for further information.
