To answer your questions: yes, yes they were, and I think the notion is valid but that many of the programs I've seen in our local area schools are not on par with what I had in my day.

I think most educated parents want to believe their children are talented and gifted in some way or another. In some cities, there is fierce competition among the well-heeled to get their kids into the "right" schools.

I don't think that talented and gifted means the kid could be the next rocket scientist. There are plenty of PhDs in this town who are waiting tables because they like being "real people." My kids turned out to be more free spirited than I would have imagined. Sure, we're awed by pint-sized concert pianists and brainiacs (we still tell our older son that he's really from another planet).

However, I think it's far more important to encourage our children to be good people of integrity and to pursue their own dreams. There are some rocket scientists I know who make lousy human beings...except for my hubby's late uncle, who was a very eccentric, but likable, rocket scientist. LOL!
