1. Burts Bees Buttermilk Soap for babies. It is great on delicate skin!
2. Boppy pillow for breastfeeding; it's amazing how tired your arms get (plus, if you have a vaginal delivery, it was a great "C"-ring pillow to sit on for some extra cushion)
3. Disposable changing pads. THESE are a necessity, right along with the disposable diaper bags. It is not environmentally friendly, but just using them for a year was a big help. Who wants to put a kid on an already-used Koala changing table, even on the pad brought from home? I felt much better having an extra physical barrier, and they are waterproof and take up virtually no room in diaper bag.
Oh, and I haven't really noticed a difference with brands, so if moms want to get the cheaper version, I'd say go for it!
