Hi Terri,

The American Cancer Society has some great information on How Will Chemo Affect My Blood Cell Count? and Can I be around my friends and family?, and they do suggest to take normal precautions to avoid infections and to avoid contagions like the flu virus. Normal precautions include washing your hands throughout the day, asking people around you to do the same, avoiding people who are obviously sick.

From another recent post about swine flu, it does not sound like the CDC is recommending any further precautions as preventative measures for the swine flu for most individuals.

However, I think this is an important question for your doctor, and not just about swine flu, but any viruses that may be circulating in your area.

Where are you receiving your chemo treatments? At home, hospital or doctor's office?

Do you know how often your doctor will be testing your CBC counts? As you know, they can get a picture of your white blood cell count and help your body fight off infections if needed.

You said you are re-starting chemo TODAY?! How are you feeling? I hope everything goes well, and that you only need a brief treatment!
