Let's say your last period began April 1 and you have a 26-day cycle. Your most fertile period would be 4/09 through 4/19. And sperm can live for several days, so yes, if you had sex on days 9 and 10, you're doing the right thing if you want to become pregnant!

One of the things that's impossible to predict, however, is exactly when you ovulate and whether the sperm are right where they need to be, right when they need to be there. Fertilization must take place, and then the egg must implant successfully in the uterus for a pregnancy to actually take place.

Perfectly healthy couples sometimes take a few months to conceive, even when they are trying to do so. They might have sex on the "perfect" days but no pregnancy happens. It's normal. In fact, a couple isn't said to have a fertility problem until they have had unprotected sex normally for a year without a pregnancy occuring.
