False positives are not possible. If the hormone is detected then it is present and you are pregnant, unless you took one too soon after having had a baby (hypothetically) in which case the hormone might still be present and would not mean you were pregnant.
I am guessing that you could have possibly have lost the pregnany. Which would account for the heavy bleeding... even if there were no cramps.
This is of course a NON PROFESSIONAL assumption, based on what you have said. Definitely make an appointment to go and see your doctor. If this is what has occurred, then your Doctor may need to perform a DNC - to prevent a possible infection.
I am sorry if this is what has occurred... as I am sure this would be quite upsetting and sad for you and your signicant other!
