Hi, FYFY, and thanks for your question!

Hormones are funny little things. Just when we think we know how they act, they go and surprise us like this, and we aren't sure why. Annoying, isn't it?

On its own, two periods' worth of an extra heavy flow would probably not be worrisome. My first questions for you would be whether you have had any other symptoms -- are your cramps or PMS symptoms all the same as normal, or have they changed as well?

Have there been any changes in your life in the last couple of months? Any large stresses, any big moves, a change in physical activity or in diet? Any change in medication?

If the answers to any of those things is a "yes," it's possible that your hormones are reacting to the extra stress or change and have produced a heavier flow than normal. If the answers to all those things are "no," it might be worth just a call to your ob/gyn's office to talk to the nurse and let her or him know what's going on. Most likely they would make a note of it in your chart (which is good) and ask you to keep track of it for another couple of months to see if it continues to happen.

If you had a vaginal infection, it wouldn't result in a heavier flow. Rather, it would result in whitish or yellowish discharge from the vagina, and possibly some itching and discomfort.

How old are you? Have you ever dealt with fibroids, or endometriosis? They are both benign conditions that can wreak havoc with our periods. So can pelvic inflammatory disease, but it also can cause pain, which you didn't mention.

Here are a couple of good pages that include information about heavy menstrual bleeding:

Does this help some?
