Denise, that is what happened to me! I had was extremely shortsighted (-10) and it wasn't discovered till I was 8. My family and friends just thought I was a little slow!
The first day I got glasses I could barely sleep. I was so excited to see actual leaves on trees. I still remember seeing stars for the first time. It was amazing.
Another clue for parents to look out for is sitting too close to the TV or computer screen. My mum says I would always slide my chair closer to the TV when I was really interested in a show. Dont assume your child is slow or has behavioural problems ... they may not be able to see clearly.
