Orlistat, the active ingredient in Xenical, works by preventing the digestion and absorption of a portion of fat from your diet. Our intestines produce enzymes called lip ases whose function is to breakdown fat molecules into its simplest form so that it can be absorbed into the body. Xenical Orlistat attaches itself to the lipases (produced primarily by the pancreas) and prevents them from breaking down some of the fat (about one-third).
