It does seem like a cruel side effect, but a side effect of emergency contraception is that it can cause your period to be irregular...meaning it could be early or late. You are counting down every day, but even the most "regular" cycle can be off by a few days or more without taking emergency contraception. There is no harm in your cycle being "off", and you may need to wait until your next cycle to have a regular-by-the-calendar period again. ("Next cycle" meaning you count this cycle as a "missed period", then wait for your next period to begin in 21-35 days). Probably the last thing you wanted to hear, but there are a few recommendations before waiting another month below.

Since it has only been 29 days (easy for me to say, right?!), please give yourself one more week, or wait until day 35, until testing again. You can write on your calendar to "test again", and try to tell yourself that you are not going to think about this until that day if your period has not begun. Can you think of ways to help reduce your anxiety, be it spend more time with friends or family, or engage in fun activities that you enjoy?

If your period has not started at day 35, and you still have a negative pregnancy test, it is probably accurate, but you may want to call your Gynecologist to ask for his/her recommendation (s/he may tell you to wait until your next expected period/cycle, and that you can assume you just missed this period because of the emergency contraception).

Do you have a Gyn?
