Hi Mylink,

Since you said you have "read all about it" I am assuming that posting all the side effects of the medication is irrelevant on this post.

Here is what I can tell you-- my husband took it for a couple of months and did quit smoking on it (though the stress of events after did not make it a successful, permanent solution and he is back to smoking). While he was on Chantix, he was a bit moody and ran on a short fuse-- that was the worst of it for us. I expected this though because a man who had been smoking for almost twenty years trying to quit is not easy, no matter what medication it is.

On the other hand, the most severe side effect of the medication is suicidal thoughts-- you CAN take Chantix as long as you are fully aware of your thoughts and behaviors and can realize when you are no longer being yourself. My husbands uncle also took this medication for less than a month and he started to feel depressed and suicidal-- as soon as he felt this way he informed his doctor and the doctor told him to stop taking Chantix. Normally, you'd get a prescription for another med but he very bravely quit cold turkey after the experience.

Like I said, you can take Chantix without worrying "am I going to kill myself because of a medication?" It is important that you recognize who you are and the effects the med has on you-- if you start to feel sad, depressed, miserably unhappy with life-- then you know to stop taking something that isn't worth making you feel that way.

My husband has decided that he will slowly taper down to less cigarettes a day and once he is ready to completely give it up he will go back on Chantix. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
