I also get really bad cramps sometimes on my period to the point where I can barely get out of bed. What I do is just take some painkillers but since you said you can't pop any pills then try using a heating pad. I've used it and it works very well. For me, the fetal position doesn't work whilst I'm on my period. I normally lie down on my back and lift my legs so they're bent. Then, I take my heating pad and try to sleep for 15-30 minutes. This helps a lot! One more thing, try to watch your salt, caffeine and dairy intake too. You could always eat some dark chocolate while you have your heating pad on your tummy too!
