17 days of bleeding is not within the normal range for a period, and could signify an infection or underlying medical condition. It could be your period regulating itself, but I would want to rule out other factors first. I think you have a good plan...if you are still experiencing bleeding for another few days, calling the doctor is a good idea. If you have another period that lasts for more than 7 days, please call your doctor, as this is likely not part of the "self-regulating" process.
Stress and gaining a little weight would likely not cause bleeding for 17 days. Would you describe the bleeding as heavy? Is this spotting or actual period-like bleeding? Are you soaking through more than one tampon or pad in an hour? Are you experiencing any pain? If yes to any of these, it would be important to call your doctor today.
