Yes, for the best result......don't wash your hair.
I backpacked around the world for 2 years with my girlfriend.
We both decided not to wash our hair and after the first 6 weeks (in which our hair was truely disgusting) it eventually got better and better.
We both had long hair and all we did was rinse with plain water, usually from a bucket, sink or stream. Because of the natural oils, it never really got wet and was completely dry in a few minutes.
We also combed it every couple of days using a comb with rounded ends so it wouldn't damage the scalp. It always looked great and after returning home I always intended to keep it that way.
However, after attending a party with many people smoking....I was forced to wash it to removed the smell. That was a big mistake as only one wash puts you back at the start.
