Birth control pills are 99% effective at preventing pregnancy, and women are 100% in control of this type of pregnancy-prevention. Condoms are up to 98% effective, but can be less reassuring as pregnancy-prevention (the man is in control, a supply of condoms needs to be accessible, etc).

Birth control pills are at their most effective rate after 7 days of using them (consistently and correctly), and yes, this does include sex-without-condoms. (In other words, if the man ejaculates inside the woman, the birth control pill still provides up to 99% effectiveness against pregnancy).
