Hi Anonymous,
I searched the internet for information on recent studies that link estrogen plus progesterone replacement therapy and the increased risk of heart disease. I could not find any information that indicated an increased risk with restarting hormone replacement after being off of the treatment.
Analysis of data, released in February 2010 from the Women's Health Initiative, showed a trend that combination therapy, (estrogen and progesterone) increased the risk of heart disease during the first 2 years of hormone therapy among women who began therapy within 10 years of menopause.
Because of the risks associated with menopausal replacement therapy, it should be taken at the smallest dose for the shortest time possible.
Choosing to take hormone replacement therapy is a personal decision that you and your doctor should make as a team. Your doctor should be able to advise you and answer any questions you have regarding the benefits of hormone therapy versus the risks.
HRT is not recommended for women who have a history of a previous heart attack or stroke. Since you have a family history of heart disease, this is something you need to talk to your doctor about and strongly consider.
Please keep us posted and would appreciate more information on the recent studies that your doctor is referring to. This may be helpful information to other women facing the same issue.
