I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I think you're doing the right thing by going back to your OB/GYN. Ask lots of questions and have your doctor perform any necessary tests to determine what the problem could be. If you were diagnosed with PCOS then this could be the reason for your irregular bleeding, but if you feel like it may not be the PCOS but something else instead, question your diagnosis-- you have a right to more tests to either confirm your diagnosis or potentially finding the true reason for your painful, heavy, period.
