You've illuminated the importance of perspective, how 1 in 8 can be flipped to speak about the other 7 in 8. That is the real issue, benefits vs. risks, but for whom? We are not all the same. If I had opted to keep my breasts, knowing I was BRCA positive, I might be begging for bi-monthly mammograms. And yet, even having known and lived with so much fear of breast cancer, having watched so many women in my family saved by mammograms, our breast cancer risk is not every woman's breast cancer risk - thank goodness! And boy do I know the stress of endless false positives - absolute torture.
