A person, like yourself, with a personal history of more than one kidney stone may be more likely to develop more stones.

Most kidney stones pass out of the body without any intervention by a physician. Stones that cause lasting symptoms or any complications need to be treated by various procedures.

Kidney stones often do not cause any symptoms. When they do, the first symptom is usually extreme pain, which begins suddenly when a stone moves in the urinary tract and blocks the flow of urine. Typically, you feel a sharp, cramping pain in the back and side of the area of the kidney or in the lower abdomen. Sometimes, a person will experience nausea and vomiting. The pain may spread to the groin.

A fever and chills accompany any of these symptoms if there is an infection.

Kidney stones either pass on their own or require intervention. New ones can develop.

Kidney stones are diagnosed by x-ray, ultrasound, CT scan or an intravenous pyelogram (IVP).

A urinary tract infection is responsible for a less common type of kidney stone called a struvite or infection stone.

Good Luck on Wednesday,
