wtf they wouldn't give you tampons? do you have any friends or relatives that will give you some?
If there is a homeless shelter for women, maybe you could get some there. Or maybe Planned Parenthood or another women's health clinic.
Also, some swanky hotels have pads and tampons in the hotel lobby bathroom (like the Marriott)...
For future reference, the tamons that come without applicators (like O.B., and some other brands) are so much cheaper, you get like 100 tampons for $4 i think.
If you really can't find anything, if you have some old washclothes, or old flannel shirt, you can make your own washable pads for free (or you can just pin them in your panties, easy! I've done this when i didn't have anything else before)
Now i use a Diva Cup, which is a big expense up front ($40) but i only have to buy one every 3 years, so it's really cheap in the long run, if you can afford that eventually. It holds 1 oz, so that's pretty good too if you have a heavy period.
