Guide

Hello Anonymous,

There are two things in your question that concern me- the need to catheterize three times a day to empty your bladder and the swelling in your feet and ankles.

Retention of urine or the inability to urinate is one complication of this procedure. Flomax is in a class of medications called alpha blockers. It works by relaxing the muscles in the bladder so that urine can flow easily. This should help, but it may take several weeks.

It is normal to have swelling following surgery. Your urologist can best tell you just how long it will take for the swelling to resolve, but I think at least a month.

Though it is necessary for you to catheterize, each time you do so, you are irritating the urethra, which connects the bladder to the outside of the body. This adds to the swelling.

Please mention the swelling in your feet and ankles to your urologist.
