I can appreciate your feelings. Sensitivity to patient's altered body image is not taught, but should be, in medical school. Unfortunately, the current climate in medicine, which is strongly dictated by insurance reimbursements, leaves a physician little time to focus on a patient's emotional issues.
That sensitivity and sharing of a patient's concern by a physician is an individual personal trait.
