When searching for a surgeon, there's very limited reviews. They are mostly glowing or you'll find an occasional unhappy patient that may or may not have valid complaints. I find there's a lot of background information (education, internships, specialties), though very little clear, tangible information. Many doctors refer only to specific surgeons based on agreements and friendships. As a retired RN, I'd ask a nurse for suggestions or a physical therapist if it's an orthopedic issue. Friends and family can make referrals, though often (not always) they are based more on emotions (they liked their doctor, felt listened to etc) than capabilities. Over the years, I have worked with very charming surgeons who I would never consider going to or referring anyone to. It's a tricky thing to find the right surgeon, though not impossible. Get several opinions, go for an informational appointment and get your questions answered, use your intuition and make the best decision you can.
