Hello anicaoaks,

Cardiovascular disease, commonly called heart disease, encompasses conditions of the heart and blood vessels, many of which are related to atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis develops when plaque builds up in the walls of the arteries. The most serious complication of cardiovascular disease are a heart attack and a stroke.

An ischemic stroke, which is the most common type, happens when a blood vessel that supplies the brain gets blocked, usually from a blood clot. Anticoagulants, such as Warfarin , are prescribed as a preventative measure.

A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel within the brain bursts. Uncontrolled hypertension is the cause. Anti hypertensive drugs along with lifestyle changes are prescribed to reduce high blood pressure and prevent a stroke.

Heart failure, arrhythmia and heart valve problems are three other types of cardiovascular disease.

Heart failure is sometimes referred to as congestive heart failure. It means the heart is not pumping blood as well as it should. Treatment is based on what stage of heart failure the patient is in. Usual treatment begins with treating high blood pressure and lipid disorders. Recommendations include quit smoking and discontinue alcohol and illegal drug use. ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, and beta blockers are the drugs of choice.

An arrhythmia or irregular heart rhythm is treated with medications, a pacemaker, as you mentioned, and cardiac defibrillation.

Heart valve problems are treated with medications and surgery.
