Hi Anon,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community! Anytime you take emergency contraception, it will most likely upset your menstrual cycle and make it a bit irregular. Common symptoms of emergency contraception include cramping, nausea, bloating, and changes to your menstrual cycle.

Since you have taken emergency contraception a few times, it is very likely that the cramping is a side effect of that. Emergency contraception is effective and can help protect against unwanted pregnancy, but I must warn you, it should not be used as your normal form of birth control.

If you are having sex and do not want to become pregnant, I highly suggest using protection like a condom or getting on some form of birth control. It will reduce the need to use emergency contraception (which can mess up your menstrual cycle) and provide much greater protection against pregnancy.

If your cramping continues for a long time and gets worse, I suggest visiting your doctor.

I hope this has helped! Please let me know if you have further questions.

Best,
Erin
