That black line you've discovered could be what dermatologist call Longitudinal Melanonychia (Nail Pigment Banding). It's caused by increased melanin pigment in the nail plate. Melanin is the same pigment that determines skin color and allows people to tan.  Longitudinal Melanonychia is not common in people of with fair complexions.   

First and formost, it's important to note that not all nail pigmentation are  Longitudinal Melanonychia . It could be blood collected under the nail plate Subungual Hematoma.  However, I will urge you to make no assumptions either way, but do be proactive and appointment to get yourself checked out.
