Guide

Hello and thank you for choosing EmpowHer,
There are many possible reasons this is happening.
-Uterine fibriods (non-cancerous growths of the uterus wall)
-Polyps on uterine lining
-Thyroid disfunction
-Endometrial hyperplasia, a thickened endometrium
-A bleeding disorder, like von Willebrand disease
-Problems with blood clotting
-Glandular issues
-Infection
-Ovarian cysts

Since there are many underlying causes of prolonged/irregular bleeding, it is extremely important that you see a doctor. You are right however. Most doctors will treat the symptom by immediately prescribing birth control pills without even performing an examination to check for the underlying cause. This is a huge problem and one you can avoid by knowing what to ask for.
I highly suggest that you go with a list of these possible causes and ask about each one. Have at least a pap smear and ultrasound. If those do not show anything abnormal, you may also want to get a Endometrial Biopsy.
It is very important, especially since you've had kids, to be very thorough in ruling out all the possible causes before assuming it is simply hormonal imbalances.
I wish you all the best.
Faith
