Guide

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. I am glad you reached out to our community. I am disappointed that neither your physician or nurses gave you more information. If you have an infection, it is imperative you know what the infection is and receive proper treatment.

A normal white blood cell for an adult is 4,500 to 10,000 cells/mcl. (in United States). A value of 17,000 cells/mcl is very high, as you are aware and you deserve an explanation.

High numbers of WBCs (leukocytosis) may indicate infectious diseases, inflammatory disease (such as rheumatoid arthritis or allergy) leukemia, severe emotional or physical stress, and tissue damage, such as with burns.

Regards,
Maryann
