Dear Anon,

Welcome to EmpowHer!

Experiencing pain the first time you have sex is common. There are many of reasons why, and each woman's experience will be different. Maybe your hymen (a thin membrane of tissue that partially blocks the vaginal opening) was still intact. Or, perhaps you weren't sufficiently aroused. When you're aroused, the vaginal canal lengthens and expands (so your partner's penis can fit), and you produce lubrication which helps (with uncomfortable friction from his thrusting). It's also possible that you were just nervous, which would cause your vaginal muscles to tighten, making penetration more difficult.

Discuss this with your partner, take it slow, and be sure you are using protection.

I hope this information has helped!

Best,
Helena
