There may be some genetic component to Type 1, therefore there is no way to avoid it. It's generally something that's very unfortunate but if you get it, it's not something you could have avoided.
For Type 2, a healthy diet, a healthy weight and lots of exercise will not guarantee you won't get it but odds are good that you won't. While there is also a genetic component, Type 2 often runs in families because of poor diet and poor lifestyle choices. It's very unusual for a fit and healthy person to get Type 2.
