From what I read, the researchers found a link between four personality traits and excessive substance use; those traits are gregariousness, impulsiveness, sensation-seeking and rebelliousness.
Of course, there is *only* a link (not a proven cause-and-effect), and who knows if it is just a coincidence that people with those personality traits are more likely to experiment and try new things (everything from bungee jumping to smoking or drinking), or if there is more of a real, evidence-based association.
Chicken or egg again: did the traits lead to substance use, or substance use lead to traits? Who knows!
