Can I improve my eye health?

I have bad vision, and wear contacts. Is there a non-surgical way to improve my vision (supplements, foods, etc)?

Hello Sharon Kay,

I would like to welcome you to the EmpowHER community and thank you for reaching out to us with your concern about eye health.

The television commercials for vitamins to improve eye health abound.

However, to properly answer your question, I would need to know what you mean by bad vision. Common vision problems that require eye glasses or contact lens include:

myopia or nearsightedness - light comes to focus in front of the retina instead of on the retina.

hyperopia or farsightedness: the eyes focus images behind the retina instead of on the retina, which can result in blurred vision. This occurs when the eyeball is too short, which prevents incoming light from focusing directly on the retina.

astigmastism: a vision condition that causes blurred vision due either to the irregular shape of the cornea, the clear front cover of the eye, or sometimes the curvature of the lens inside the eye. An irregular shaped cornea or lens prevents light from focusing properly on the retina, the light sensitive surface at the back of the eye. As a result, vision becomes blurred at any distance.

Only corrective lens or surgery can help a person with these vision problems see clearly. Vitamins, foods and supplements will not correct these vision issues.

Regards,
Maryann
