im 17 and have had my period for about 4 years and i always bleed through my tampons but when i take it out theres barely any blood except for the side and the bottom. i usually only have the tampon in for about and hour or two before i bleed through. i tried using a higher absorbancy but nothing has worked. i also have tried many different brands but none of them work either. im really tired of this. im an althlete and this is quite difficult for me to handle. am i putting the tampon in wrong? if so what is the correct way. please help me! i just want to be normal!

thanks so much

Jamie,
I agree-that's not good! It sounds like you are not bleeding heavily (which would be a concern), just that the tampons may not be inserted correctly. And, you are wearing them correctly in that you change tampons frequently (every 2-4 hours). However, bleeding that would be considered too heavy if you have to change your pad or tampon very often (soaking more than one pad/tampon every 1–2 hours).

Since you have tried different brands and different levels of absorbency, my other suggestions are:
1. Use a thin pantyliner (as long as your sport is not swimming) as backup; there are some brands that just feel like part of your underwear and do not interfere with physical activity.
2. Perhaps you are not inserting the tampon far enough inside or at a different angle? Here is some information from one of the tampon company websites:
"The vagina slants upwards towards your back. So, gently slide the applicator in an upwards and backwards direction. (It sometimes helps to slightly rotate or twist the applicator from side to side). Stop pushing when your thumb and finger touch your body."

You know the tampon is in correctly when you can't feel it at all; if it is not in far enough, you can feel it and it creates an irritating sensation.

I hope this helps!
