When to Buy Organic

Today I decided to get soup from a noodle place for lunch. As I walked in, the waitress accidentally dropped my order and I had to sit at the bar to wait for them to re-make my soup. I was looking at all the different alcohols at the bar and noticed that one brand had the word "organic" in big letters across the top. I was shocked to see the word on a bottle of alcohol. It made me wonder if people would see the word organic and think they are drinking and creating a healthier lifestyle as a result.

I thought today might be a day to explain why organic alcohol is not necessarily a part of a healthy lifestyle. When something is organic it means it has not been grown using pesticides or other chemicals that are toxic or create toxins in the body. Your liver is the main organ of elimination so it is responsible for detoxifying alcohol and other toxins. The idea of organic alcohol is not really healthy because alcohol, organic or not, causes and creates toxins in the body. Alcohol can also affect people’s ability to lose weight and it impacts blood sugar levels for people with pre-diabetes and diabetes. The liver is also responsible for helping to regulate the glucose and insulin levels. When you drink alcohol the liver has to process the sugars in the alcohol as well as the detoxifying it. So alcohol consumption--even one glass--can affect people’s state of health because of the interaction between your liver and the way it processes insulin levels.

I’m a big fan of organic foods. I would recommend that people consider going organic for fruits and vegetables. You can check the more important foods to eat organic by going to the environmental working group www.ewg.org. Alcohol is not going to show up on their lists. It is important to learn how to create a healthy lifestyle and part of that is understanding terms like organic so you can spend your time and money on the buying the right organic items.
