Dr. Cannada:
You could have one ankle sprain that’s sprained your ankle enough to require surgery. Your ligaments, if you want to think that your ligament is like this and if you get a minor ankle sprain the ligament is still intact. If you tear some of your ligaments and disrupt that and that happens with the first ankle sprain you aren’t going to have the same ankle that you had before.
So that would, in fact I had surgery to reconstruct my ligaments after one bad fall. When I tried to run in the snow I had completely torn my ligaments. So I had instability. I would just be walking and my ankle would give way. So it’s not how many, it’s how severe was the damage to your ligaments and how lose or lax is your ankle since that injury.
