Dr. Braun:
Cancer is one of the kinds of diseases which is incredibly complex and which is able to strike any person, really regardless of what their background is and what their socioeconomic realities are. Because of its complexity at both the cellular and molecular levels, the kinds of work that I do and others like me, really are to uncover the rules by which cancer occurs and what we can do to reverse those events. That is what the clinical research enterprise is all about.
We do this through a couple of different strategies at Cancer Treatment Centers of America. We do this by understanding what makes a tumor a good target for immunologically-based killing. We do this with translational research studies that test different ways of converting the tumor from a resistant target to a more potent, sensitive target and we do this by investigating how we can prepare a patient’s own immune system to respond to the kinds of stimulants that we use.
So at Cancer Treatment Centers of America, we have two ways of approaching this; what makes the tumor susceptible to the kinds of immune stimulants we are using and what makes the patient maximally responsive to the kinds of immune stimulants that we are going to give her.
