Dr. Ray:
Hi, I am Steven Ray. I’m on the full-time staff at Cancer Treatment Centers of America. I have been here for six years, prior to that I was in New York State. I have done a plastic and reconstructive surgery and oncology surgery most of my life. Coming here, I came as initially doing reconstructive surgery and acupuncture. I went to acupuncture school for two years and got the acupuncture program going and then, have been concentrating on reconstructive surgery and breast surgery, bringing the two together. I am the Medical Director of the Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department.
The focus of my practice is extremely varied, but it includes all aspects of breast oncology surgery including sentinel node biopsies, biopsies, lumpectomies, mastectomies, radical mastectomies, modified radical mastectomies, resections of extremely large tumors on the chest wall, women that come with what we call locally advanced disease, inflammatory breast cancers, and severe recurrent cancers.
My interest in that area is to take care of the cancer and leave as little evidence that I was there as possible. So, for lumpectomies we will often make incisions quite a bit away from where the tumor is so that we can gain access to the tumor, remove it, check the margins very carefully in the operating room with a pathologist there, and then, put the breast back together in a way that minimizes the evidence that any kind of surgery was done.
