Dr. Williams:
Unfortunately, there is no clear screening test that’s available for ovarian cancer. There is a blood test called the CA-125, which can be useful in following a woman who has a diagnosis of ovarian cancer, but unfortunately it's not a good screening test because even in an early ovarian cancer, it can be in the normal range.

One of the other things that can be done is a pelvic ultrasound, and pelvic ultrasound together with a CA-125 level may pick up ovarian cancer. A good physical exam by a physician who is trained in doing a pelvic exam can be useful, but the ovaries aren’t always able to be felt, particularly in a postmenopausal woman.

So unfortunately, there isn’t a good screening test. It’s important that women pay attention to any symptoms that they might be having and make sure that they see their physician regularly.
