Gloria:
Well, the great news is that the majority of insurance plans now do cover contraception, but they don’t all, and it’s important for people to know this and to ask that question.
About 15 years ago, we did some research and we found that most of the insurance plans didn’t cover contraception at all. So we began a campaign, an active campaign to require, through legislation and through litigation, that if an insurance plan covers other kinds of drugs and pharmaceuticals, that it should cover contraception because after all, that is basic healthcare, and 90% of couples use it at some point in their lives and so, it’s really important to women’s healthcare for insurance plans to cover contraception.
Always ask the question, and if you find that your plan doesn’t cover it, then maybe it’s time to gather together with some other people who have that same plan and do a little advocacy work.
