Katherine Puckett, Ph.D.:
At Cancer Treatment Centers of America, we embrace and practice a philosophy called "patient empowerment medicine." That means that every patient is at the center of her care team. We all work together to take care of that person, but that patient calls the shots, in essence. She can be in charge of making decisions and bringing all the resources together to help her, and there are several particular tips we offer people as well in terms of being more empowered. One is to gather information, become well informed, to take someone with you when you go to the doctor to have another set of eyes and ears so that you get all that information.
Those are emotional times and sometimes when emotions run high, we don’t hear everything we might want to hear, so bring someone to help you with that. Turn to caring relationships and get to know your own inner strengths and resources and how they can help you. Everybody has them; we can help people learn how to access them and use them in the healing process.
